Fashion Makes Noise for Women's Rightsby Suzy Menkes
Original article here

Since the horrible disaster in Bangladesh when a factory was able to kill over 1,00 female seamstresses as it crumbled, fast fashion has developed a horrible reputation. The ugliness of the fast fashion was shown again as Beyonce was seen wearing inappropriate clothing on billboards around the world not showing women empowerment. But on June 1st, 2013 in London, she was seen wearing the outfit again, but making it look better than before, at a "Chime For Change" concert to benefit women's rights. The fundraiser was called "Sound for Change Live" and was very successful. The main sponsor at the event was Gucci, to fundraise the most money as possible, which they did, since over $6.2 million was raised. This would not be possible without the superstar celebrities that attended because they brought the attention of the usual apathetic youth. They also drew most of the funds from their fans and followers on the media all over the world. From the "Sound for Change Live" event, people might be more prepared to talk about violence on women, but they might not be comfortable talking about other aspects of women's rights.

The Never Ending Trail
Life is a trail.trail.jpg
There may be bumps,
But you pass by them and forget.
Just keep moving forward.
In the end it is all worth it.
It can be tiring and scary at times,
But don't let it bring you down.
Just keep moving forward.
Find the butterflies and flowers,
The grace in everything.
Just keep moving forward.
You will find surprises,
Like seeing a mountain lion or a fox,
Some things will overwhelm you,
But don't stop moving.
You will see new people,
Other travelers to walk with,
It will be long, it will be hard,
But it will be worth it,
So keep moving forward.

Charlemagne
Charlemagne, otherwise known as Charles the Great, was born in the year of 742. He has made many great accomplishments to our world, influencing many people in history. He encouraged education and scholarship, united the Christian lands of Europe, and was the King of the Franks. To begin with, Charlemagne was the King of the Franks in 768. During his rule, the Frankish Empire expanded to include Germany, Italy, France and Spain. He was able to defeat many tribes by being a fierce warrior, but also having a loyal army and great leadership skills. His way of ruling has made a permanent mark on medieval history. Charlemagne's probably most important accomplishment would be uniting Christian Europe. He earned the nickname of "Father of Europe", he united Western Europe by bringing art, culture, and religion from the Catholic Church. Because of this, the French and German kingdoms thought that they were Charlemagne descendants. The Carolingian Empire, created by him, was the huge amount of land that he conquered and converted into Christianity. Lastly, Charlemagne was a main leader in encouraging scholarship and education for people in medieval Europe. He did this to upgrade the administrative members of his court and have people do their jobs better. Charlemagne has helped history evolve in the many accomplishments of his life.

4's for both. Terrific work. I like your poem. Mr. Chester

Japanese Painting Poem

Loyal samurai fight to the death,
In the dark of night, the moon disappearing behind the gigantic mountainside,
A warrior's gear won't make him win, but honor will keep him alive.
The bridge above the water acts as their barrier,
Between life and death.
Suddenly, one loses balance, and joins the forest of howls,
While the other rides off in the mountains,
Victorious.

I like "joins the forest of howls." Good line. Mr. Chester
